Penyumbang (Contributor) VS Penulis (Author & Co-author)

Ramai sering keliru sama ada di kalangan ahli akademik mahupun pelajar dalam menentukan siapa yang layak untuk diletakkan sebagai 'AUTHOR dan CO-AUTHOR' (PENULIS & PENULIS BERSAMA) untuk buku. Yang amat mendukacitakan ialah terlalu ramai " NAMA PENULIS" sehingga mencecah 10 ORANG untuk diletakkan sebagai "PENULIS" pada buku yang berhalaman kurang dari 100 muka surat..!!

Sebagai contoh, buku yang diterbitkan di Research University (RU):

10 penulis - 2012. Illustrated Keys: Some Mosquitoes of Peninsular Malaysia. UM Press. 87 pp.
8 penulis - 2013. 100 persoalan mengenia mata dan katarak. Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka. 74 pp.

Pada pandangan saya, jika perkara ini dibiarkan berleluasa, saya khuatir ia akan menjadi satu budaya yang boleh merosakkan disiplin sebagai penulis buku ilmiah jika tidak dibendung dengan segera. Maka, jangan terkejut pada masa akan datang bahawa ia meruntuhkan kualiti penerbitan oleh penyelidik dan pensyarah di Universiti (RU) dalam 5 tahun akan datang.

BOOK Authors

What will happen to our so called discipline when one cannot differentiate between authors and contributors ?

I say this will happen, more authors name filling the front page of the books. But who really writes the book content ?

Authors: the name of the person who writes, do most of the work at least 50% of the book

Co-authors: the name of the person who writes at least 20-45% of the book.

Contributors: the name who should be put inside the acknowledgement where this person contributes in term of financial, expanding ideas, reviewing the draft of the book, photos, providing equipment's etc. 

I have not come across a book that has more than 4 authors unless the book is very thick and providing lots of knowledge values. Or they will put as 1-4 name as editors with the person name who writes besides the chapters respectively. For example:

10 authors- 2012. Illustrated Keys: Some Mosquitoes of Peninsular Malaysia. UM Press. 87 pp.

8 authors- 2013. 100 persoalan mengenia mata dan katarak. Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka. 74 pp.

In the future, our research universities 'authors' are ambigious..!

List of ISI journals in Malaysia

Nowadays, it is very important to publish our research findings in ISI journals. We can contribute to our own national journals that are listed in ISI journals and help to increase the impact factors (IF) by submitting qualities research findings, and not treating it as a rubbish dump when our research papers is not accepted at other international ISI journals.
